Cameron Diaz: 5 Awesome Performances and 5 That Sucked
3. The Sweetest Thing
Now I really don't exaggerate when I say this, but The Sweetest Thing might well be one of the very worst movies I have ever seen. It's entirely flat, almost totally uninteresting and worse - for a sex-comedy at least - entirely unfunny. Diaz plays Christina Walters, a young-and-attractive type single girl with the focus not on finding Mr. Right but Mr. Right Now. Unfortunately, she doesn't really have a hell of a whole lot to work with here, script wise, and as such gives possibly one of the most awkward, self-debasing performances of her - at this point - short career. Mind you, the same can be said about the other two leads, Christina Applegate and Selma Blair. The problem for me was that former South Park writer Nancy M. Pimental appeared to be trying very hard to stack up to her former collaborators Matt Stone and Trey Parker by being offensive as possible, forgetting that for that to work, you have to be funny as well. An unfortunately terrible performance from Diaz as a direct result of, invariably, a poor choice of project.
