20 INSANE Horror Sequels We Almost Got
1. Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a terrific horror mockumentary centered around a journalist and her camera crew who follow a serial killer committed to cementing himself as a legendary slasher villain.
And even though killer Leslie (Nathan Baesel) appears to die at the end, the credit scene of course reveals him to have returned from the dead, teasing another rampage.
And indeed, director Scott Glosserman and co-writer David J. Stieve put plans in motion to produce a sequel - Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon, which sadly never went before cameras.
Glosserman did give fans a taste of it, though, by revealing that it was written to parody found footage and "torture porn" films, the gonzo potential of which speaks for itself.
But considering that both of these trends declined by the 2010s, the passage of time caused the concept for Before the Mask to end up feeling dated.
Glosserman confessed that he had little enthusiasm to try and update the original script for modern sensibilities, and so that combined with the first film's modest commercial performance likely ensures we'll never get a follow-up.
