Every Cancelled John Carpenter Film We NEVER Got To See

8. So Help Me God

So Help Me God
Larry Cohen

Although much of John Carpenter's career has been entrenched in horror, he always tries to find different ways to explore the genre.

So, when he learned Larry Cohen had written a supernatural courtroom script called So Help Me God, he hoped to direct it. Though So Help Me God kicks off with a possessed man being forced to commit all sorts of atrocities, it plays out like a legal drama, grounding the fantastical elements in a realistic context.

Cohen worked on several eccentric horrors before, like The Stuff, Q: The Winged Serpent, and It's Alive, so it's not much of a surprise to learn his wacky humour is sprinkled throughout the story.

Nothing may have come of So Help Me God, but Larry Cohen's entire script can be viewed online (which was revised by Child's Play director and co-writer, Tom Holland). After reading it, it's clear So Help Me God had a lot of potential, so it's a wonder why it never materialised.
