Every Cancelled John Carpenter Film We NEVER Got To See

19. Meltdown

In the late 1970s, Carpenter toyed with the idea of adapting The Prometheus Crisis, which centres around a massive nuclear facility that's primed to explode.

But in Carpenter's version, which was called Meltdown, the stakes would be even higher. While the nuclear operators and engineers are trying to stop the facility from turning into a crater, their efforts would be sabotaged by a serial killer. In Carpenter's own words, it was "Halloween in a nuclear power plant".

Although Meltdown fizzled out, it wasn't for nought since Carpenter reworked the serial killer angle into Halloween.

After Carpenter was out of the picture, there were several attempts to resurrect Meltdown. In 1993, John Dahl was attached to the property, with Dolph Lundgren set to star. Although the project's plug was pulled, another effort was made to bring Meltdown to the screen, with Casper Van Dien of Starship Troopers fame in the lead. Carpenter was credited for the screenplay, but it's unclear whether either adaptation would follow his script faithfully.

Sadly, we'll never know, since all efforts to adapt Meltdown collapsed due to legal issues over distribution rights.
