20 Upcoming Film & TV Shows That Just Got Cancelled
8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is a comic book miniseries released between 2020 and 2022, which takes place in an alt-universe where Michelangelo is the one remaining Turtle and seeks revenge for the death of his brothers against The Shredder's grandson.
The series was widely acclaimed for its darker tone, and so many were excited when Paramount announced that an R-rated, live-action film adaptation was in development in April 2024.
The script was set to be written by Tyler Burton Smith (Boy Kills World), and most enticingly up-and-coming action filmmaker Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry, Nobody) was in talks to direct.
But sadly last November word got out that The Last Ronin has been put "on hold," in large part due to the Paramount-Skydance merger, with the new regime being reluctant to bankroll a bloody live-action Turtles film.
Instead, they reportedly want to "Sonic-ify" the IP as a big, broad, family-friendly tentpole franchise, with a new live-action Turtles film being slated to release in 2028.
Though The Last Ronin hasn't been formally scrapped, with development stopped and the obviously risk-averse nature of the current paradigm at Paramount, there's virtually no chance it gets made now or ever, sadly.
