20 Upcoming Film & TV Shows That Just Got Cancelled
7. New Red Dwarf TV Special
The last episode of beloved British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf was the feature-length TV special Red Dwarf: The Promised Land, which was released way back in April 2020.
This marks the longest period without any new Red Dwarf content since the series was revived with 2009's Back to Earth specials, and though delays were caused by both the pandemic and a legal battle over the rights to the show, by 2024 a new three-part Red Dwarf special was said to be in the works.
However, last September co-creator Doug Naylor revealed that the special had been cancelled because network UKTV had decided to step away from commissioning scripted comedy series.
The script, which Naylor had already written two-thirds of, would've seen Lister (Craig Chrales) travel back through time to try and prevent his younger self from going into stasis, all while Rimmer (Chris Barrie) races to stop him.
Though Naylor hopes that another network might pick up the special, if it doesn't happen he plans to adapt the script into a novel.
Considering Red Dwarf's lineage in British pop-culture, it's frankly absurd that a streaming service hasn't pounced at the chance to rescue it yet.
