17. Monsters University
Director: Dan Scanlon Starring: Billy Crystal & John Goodman There's usually at least some animation presence on the Croisette, with Madagascar 3 taking last year's spot after Up took the opening night slot a couple of years back, and the opportunity to screen the new Pixar is likely to be one that the organisers of the Special Screening schedule would do well to consider. Though Pixar have hit a relative slump recently (they're still up there in the excellent band), thanks to the "failure" of Cars 2 and the more muted reception to Brave, the return of Sully and Mike will provide them with the shot in the arm that only their second best group of characters could. And why wouldn't Cannes want to be a little part of that magic?
16. Only God Forgives
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn Starring: Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas & Tom Burke. Having cemented his position as the festival darling with the response to his bonkers but achingly cool Drive, it's fairly likely that Nicolas Winding Refn will return to France with his latest Ryan Gosling picture in tow. This tale of a cop and a gangster going at it to settle their differences sounds an awful lot like the plot of a late 80s Kickboxer sequel, starring a lesser Sylvester Stallone, but that parallel makes for an exciting prospect considering the wonderful retro feel he brought to Drive.
