4. If ....
If you were to ask most people what film the actor Malcolm McDowell is most renowned for the odds are they'd respond with Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. But while his performance in that film was truly excellent it's a shame that it often overshadows his work with another great director, Lindsay Anderson. The first collaboration between Anderson and McDowell, If...., represents one of the high points of the British New Wave which emerged in the late 60s and early 70s - a raucous satirical romp througha fictional boarding school in which McDowell's trouble-causing student Mick Travis leads a revolt against the establishment. Anarchic, playful and often hilarious, Anderson and McDowell followed If... up with the equally beguiling O Lucky Man! Both films are among the greatest British movies ever made, and at three hours running time each make for a perfect all-day movie marathon.
