Like Lindsay Anderson, Wim Wenders also found himself caught up in a significant cinematic movement in the 1970s - the former photographer and playwright emerged as one of the key figures of the New German Cinema movement along with the likes of Werner Herzog and Rainer Werner Fassbender. While his early German language films earned him considerable acclaim, it was his foray into English language cinema set in and around the wilds of the American south, which earned him a Palme d'Or award. Starring Harry Dean Stanton and Nastassja Kinski, Paris, Texas tells the story of a man who emerges from the desert suffering from amnesia, who slowly pieces together his past and tries to reconcile with his family. Ry Cooder's excellent music underscores the sense of vastness to the locations, while Robby Muller's sumptuous cinematography makes this one of the best looking films to have emerged at the time.
