Cannes 2015: 10 Past Palme d'Or Winning Movies You Have To See

5. Rosetta

The Belgian Dardenne brothers' background in documentary films is one of the first things that strikes the viewer when watching their movies - featuring mostly handheld camerawork and naturalistic performances, they attempt to craft art as closely to real life as possible. Their first feature to win the Palme d'Or, Rosetta, is a striking example of the effectiveness of this approach. Focusing on the life of a teenage girl as she struggles to support her alcoholic mother in a deprived Belgian city, it's a raw and challenging film which went on to inspire a change in the law regarding teenager workers in the country. The Dardenne brothers picked up another Palme d'Or for their equally impressive film The Child - more recently they vied for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with Two Days, One Night.
