Cannes 2015: 10 Potentially Incredible Films In Competition

6. The Assassin

Chinese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien's The Assassin is the first time this acclaimed director has made a film in seven years, and his return behind the camera has been marked by an increase in budget and scope to match the epic martial arts story he's chosen to tell. The Assassin certainly promises to be an altogether different kind of film compared to Hsiao-Hsien's previous works, which are often low key affairs (for instance his French production Flight Of The Red Balloon) - indeed, the director has gone on record discussing the new scope, saying, "It's really a whole new world for me because the market is now so big, because of China. So the scale is much bigger, and that makes every detail different, so now even I have to adjust my scale." Hou Hsiao-Hsien has been featured at Cannes no less than six times over the course of his illustrious career, but is yet to pick up the Palme d'Or. Perhaps this could be the year that changes.
