Captain America - Civil War: 10 Characters Martin Freeman Could Be Playing

1. Everett K. Ross

This is the part where everyone but the die-hardest of comic book fans goes "‘who?" Ross is the bumbling, yet effective U.S. State Department liaison for Wakanda, the Black Panther's home. Developed during Christopher Priest's iconic run, Ross serves as an audience surrogate meant to make the African kingdom of Wakanda more accessible.

His service as Black Panther's American aide, driver and general tour guide could play out exactly the same and could easily help to introduce both the audience and the Avengers to T'Challa's arrival.

While Marvel has no problem letting their characters step out of the comic counterparts' shadows, considering that very few viewers would really know Ross, Freeman could have a lot of room to craft an original character. In that sense, he could also fulfill the aforementioned Henry Peter Gyrich role of government oversight, albeit in a more likeable manner.

This could be a role of simultaneous comic relief and government representation, allowing Freeman to steal a lot of scenes as he plays an overmatched, fresh-faced lawyer against an African monarch and/or the world's most famous team of heroes. And with Freeman rumoured to re-appear in Black Panther, this role would obviously allow for that.
