Captain America: Civil War - 10 Theories On How It All Ends
7. Both Sides Were Being Played All Along
Is it possible that, despite believing that they are acting of their own free will based on their own moral compasses, both Captain America and Iron Man are being played right from the start? Captain America: Civil War's lead villain Baron Zemo is known to despise superheroes and everything they stand for in the comics, going out of his way to sway public opinion on them by having his men masquerade as heroes and raise hell of the streets of the USA. If Daniel Brühl's character was to catch wind of disharmony in the Avengers camp, he could be the one to orchestrate the whole conflict from behind the scenes, though for this he would need an inside man. Up steps Martin Freeman, a man whose character we know little about other than he will work in conjunction with the superheroes and certain agencies that want to tame their powers. Freeman himself has said that nobody will be sure which side his character is on, and if it turns out he has been recruited by Zemo, the Baron will be able to plant seeds that will grow into distrust and eventually full blown war. The Avengers (being superheroes, and all) would come to realise they have been played and reunite to take care of the Baron, bringing the team back together in time for the third Avengers outing in 2018.
