Captain America: Civil War - 5 Minor Characters Who Will Become Really Important

3. Peggy Carter

Yes, she€™s a massive character in the grand scheme of things, but she€™s been shunted way down the pecking order since the first Captain America film. Granted, that€™s because of the relentless, remorseless march of time and as much as he€™d like to, the Cap can€™t just sit chatting at her bedside all day. She€™s a vague presence and a conceptual tool more than she is an actual character in The Winter Soldier, there to keep Cap grounded in his own era and remind the audience of the pathos that€™s inherent in the idea of seeing beyond one€™s years. However, the mechanics of how she becomes incredibly important again are very interesting. There€™s a lot of talk on fan sites about the potential for havoc which Peggy€™s death - which already looked pretty inevitable as she's 96 now, but which has been given a major boost by rumours of a funeral sequence featuring Union Jacks in abundance having been filmed - might wreak on Captain America and by extension the trajectory of his pack of Avengers. One theory holds that Peggy€™s death will happen while Cap's off fighting Iron Man€™s pro-government forces overseas somewhere, and the resentment he€™ll feel at having missed his best girl€™s final moments will push him into either a blinding rage or a last-ditch attempt at rapprochement having seen how pointless the fighting actually is.
