Captain America: Civil War - 7 Theories On How Bucky Will Be Key

6. Bucky Will Have Been A Double Agent All Along

By The Winter Soldier's end, we were lead to believe that Bucky' brain washing was wearing off, that without a recent memory reset he was remembering who he once was. There's also the tears he shed at the Captain America exhibit and the small matter of the Civil War trailer, where he proves himself to Steve with some sepia-tinged childhood memories. If there's an important question that the film's directors, the Russo brothers, have posed though, it's whether The Winter Soldier is the world's greatest living assassin or the longest serving prisoner of war. Just how much of the real Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes is really left over from when he fell off that train in The First Avenger? It's fair to say that audiences are invested in Bucky's redemption now, what with seeing him save Cap's life and reestablishing the bond that the two had all those years ago, but what if Rogers' judgement is impaired and his trust misplaced? What if Bucky still works for Hydra? The ultimate victory for Hydra would surely be to use The Winter Soldier to break Cap's spirit, and what better way to do that than by having him believe he could save a friend who no longer exists.
