Captain America: Civil War - 8 Characters Who Will Be Totally Different

4. Bucky Barnes

The end-credits scene from Ant-Man and various Civil War trailer descriptions have tantalizingly teased the resolution to the open-ended arc we last left James Buchanan Barnes with at the end of his eponymous flick in 2014. It€™s become apparent that Bucky will be regaining his memory at some point, as he stands to fight on Team Captain America. What this means for the character is yet another one-eighty from his previous incarnation. We€™re unlikely to have the cold, silent, programmed antagonist from the last film as we€™re seeing Barnes escape the mental binds of being the Winter Soldier, which means we€™re going to see him become a whole new character next year. The Bucky Barnes audiences thought dead in The First Avenger isn€™t going to return from the grave: falling to your presumed death, having a metal arm affixed to you and going through decades of torture and brainwashing at the hands of evil scientists does change a guy, and not generally for the better. In the first Captain America, Bucky was a fairly black-and-white character, the firm and loyal sidekick; in The Winter Soldier, he was an unwilling villain, gaining more dimension as we see the tragedy of his story unfold; and now in Civil War, another aspect of Barnes will emerge. All things considered, he may well be the most interesting character in next year€™s highly anticipated lineup: with a traumatic past to explore, a redemption arc begging to happen, and a kickass metal arm, what else could you want out of a Marvel character?
