Captain America: Civil War Isn't Going To Be Like The Comics (At All)

From the people who brought you The Mandarin.

Ohmygod there's going to be a Civil War movie! Who's excited for Spider-Man's umasking? What about the part where Iron Man goes full super-villain and makes an evil Thor/sends all the good guys to an alternate dimension? And of course Captain America will be shot at the end because that's what happened in the follow-up comic that the Russo brothers are so definitely following. SHUT UP. Literally, stop saying that. Captain America: Civil War is going to be nothing like the comics. The trailer should have really clued everyone in (none of those iconic moments have any place in the movie teased there), but beyond that Joe Russo, one of the directors of the film has literally said he couldn't give a f**k. Well, kinda. When talking about the movie's villain (who isn't Iron Man, a major departure from the comics in its own right), he said:

Zemo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not Zemo from the comics, and what€™s interesting and surprising is that we don€™t always honour the mythology from the books. One, because it€™s predictable and two, it€™s not servicing the story in the way we want. So, if Zemo were in this movie, I think people should expect that it€™s going to be something fresh and exciting.
He's essentially saying that Zemo (played by Daniel Brühl) isn't going to be like his print counterpart, which makes total sense - set to be the main baddie here, he's only got a negligible part in the comic series. I have zero problem with this. Do what works for the movie, rather than making a direct adaptation for the sake of it. But beyond the OK-ness of it all, it's hardly a surprise. Again, Zemo doesn't have a big role in the comics, yet is being pumped up to lead villain status here, but nothing about the Civil War enterprise since that fan-made poster has suggested Marvel are adapting Civil War. It's a Captain America movie, the MCU is set up to be totally different to the comics universe circa 2006 and Marvel has a terrible track record for adapting anything accurately. Heck, we're dealing with a studio whose adaptation of their main character's biggest villain (Iron Man, Mandarin, obviously) turned him into an extended, movie defining punchline. The people who did that are going to adapt your comic faithfully? Please. Captain America: Civil War (not Civil War: The Movie) is in cinemas from the 29th April 2016 in the UK and 6th May 2016 in the US.
