Captain America: Civil War Review - 10 Reasons It’s A Near-Perfect Comic Book Movie

6. Every Character Feels Important

With a focus on physical action and nuanced off-fight conflict, that naturally puts a lot of weight on the actor's shoulders, more than a standard effects blockbuster typically would. Good thing Marvel's built up an incomparable cast over the past eight years, then.

Most of the big names are here, delivering their best performances. Special props definitely have to go to Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr. for being able to take their heroes down even more tortured routes without letting things get too dour, advancing characters who've appeared in six and seven movies respectively in new ways.

But it's not just the banner characters who get focus. Everyone is developed in their own special way, with an incredible ensemble balance meaning traditionally lesser-seen heroes still get their chance to shine. There's more than I can possibly summarise here, but trust me that the care for everyone is phenomenal - Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch is simultaneously in awe and fearful of her magic powers, Paul Bettany's Vision is beginning to feel the side-effects of humanity, Paul Rudd's Ant-Man is fish-out-of-water as much as comic relief. Heck, I cared more about Hawkeye here than when he was rammed down our throats in Age Of Ultron.

The big new addition to this lot is Black Panther, whose intro is slightly rushed, but when T'Challa's in the vibranium suit he's one of the movie's most interesting characters, with a unique world view that should hopefully make future Avengers movies very different to what's come before. Although, of course, there is one absolute standout.
