1. It's Important Enough To Leave Earth Under Talos' Watch
Though it’s uncertain exactly how long Fury has been off planet, it must be something he has done since Avengers: Endgame. It was definitely him that messaged Carol Danvers as he was snapped out of existence by Thanos, and he only returned when Hulk brought him and half the universe back.
It would make sense then, that this new venture is in direct response to Thanos’ invasion of Earth. Tony Stark tried to help defend the planet from extra-terrestrial threats after the Battle of New York, and while this didn’t exactly end well, Fury could be running with this same idea, only without entrusting it to a homicidal robot.
Whatever the ultimate endgame of Nick Fury’s plan, it is obviously important enough for him to leave Earth under the protection of Talos. The Skrull wore the skin of Fury as the elementals (seemingly) attacked the planet from another dimension, and Mysterio almost destroyed London. But even so, Fury barely batted an eyelid.
When his Skrull friend told him things went off the rails, Fury simply hung up the phone, not even hearing him out. His new space based team is important enough for him to not seem even slightly bothered about what is going on Earth, and this could be because he is still protecting the planet himself, just from further away than before.
