The majority of the music in Captain Marvel is amazing and very well chosen. For anyone who grew up during the 90s, it's a nostalgic walk in baggie skater pants down memory lane and for everyone else it's just a good musical experience. It's also mostly just immersive, with the songs adding colour to the background and a reminder of context.

But there's one particularly jarring musical moment that will either go down incredibly well or poorly depending on what side of the divide you fall on. It's Marmite, essentially.

The moment comes when Captain Marvel unleashes a can of whupass on her enemies and No Doubt's "Just A Girl" plays over the action. It's pretty much the most on-the-nose moment in any MCU movie and while you can see the Girl Power agenda, it still comes across as a little reductive. Obvious is all well and good, but it's not exactly subtle.

Also, the film is set months before "I'm Just A Girl" even came out, according to the Stan Lee cameo and a calendar seen in the background. So it shouldn't even be used at all, much like Nirvana's "Come As You Are" was released on Earth after Carol left for Hala, so the Supreme Intelligence using it as part of her memories makes no sense.
