Captain Marvel: 22 WTF Moments

4. The Avengers Name Makes Absolutely No Sense

And speaking of the initiative, we see Nick Fury initially call it the Protectors Initiative, which makes a lot of sense, given the nature of their relationship with Earth. But then he sees a picture of Carol Danvers getting into her plane, which has her nickname "Avenger" on the side, inspiring Fury to change the name of the initiative in her honour.

But it makes no sense to call it the Avengers Initiative. It's pretty defeatist to start out from a position expecting to be defeated and having to avenge the Earth. And in actual fact, the Avengers have done no avenging up until Avengers: Endgame. They've defended, but that name is taken and they've protected, but Fury rejected that name on day one.

He could have called it the Danvers Initiative and it would have made more sense, or, you know, The Cheeseburger Initiative, in honour of her real callsign in the comics. And yes, it is an Easter Egg relating to another Kree warrior, but we're arguing semantics here.
