15. The Twist - Secret Invasion Is Impossible

Marvel Studios have a long-established track record of using seminal comic book arcs for the bones of their movies without ever adapting anything purely. In that respect, expecting them to deliver on the Secret Invasion storyline they'd teased for months heading towards Captain Marvel's release was folly. They duped us all. Again.

Instead, the twist reveals that the Skrull are in fact the good guys and the Kree are the murderous wretches intent on their destruction as they attempt to find a planet to call home safely. In this context, the Kree are a Borg-like race answering to a higher intelligence and intent on wiping out and assimilating all inferior species.

What this means, in the long-term, is that there will be no Secret Invasion storyline into Phase 4. The Skrulls cannot be hiding on Earth, because Talos has already been there and found his family hiding in orbit. And they have no insidious reason to be embedded now: they're the innocent good guys. It's as shocking as it is clever in subverting everything we expected.
