Captain Marvel: Every MCU Movie/Event It Sets Up

2. Fury As A Master Of Deception

The Nick Fury of Captain Marvel is not the same Fury seen from Iron Man onwards. He's jokey, outgoing, and still somewhat in over his head. Yes he's a formidable operative, but he hasn't seen what the Fury of later years has seen, and a lot of that changes by the time the credits roll on Captain Marvel.

In the comics, Fury is a master of deception. He exerts different faces towards different people, and the version seen on screen in the MCU is no different. Samuel L. Jackson is excellent in that regard, and it's for that reason he's one of the standout parts of Captain Marvel. We get to see him develop over the course of the film, and given what he sees in 1995, it's understandable as to why he refuses to take risks when faced with threats without Danvers to rely on.

Yes, some will inevitably claim that Fury's characterisation in the film contradicts his depiction later on, but it works. The character is all about deception, and it's exemplified (in somewhat comedic fashion) when Coulson asks him if it's true that he lost his eye while being interrogated by the Kree.

Fury has always been a master of deception, and the events he takes part in throughout Captain Marvel inform the type of person seen in Iron Man onwards. Goose literally is the "someone" he trusted, and that's perfectly fine.
