Something that is often overlooked in Fukunaga’s career is his screenwriting efforts having contributed to the scripts of multiple films, most of which he went on to direct.

Following his work on the 2011 adaptation of Jane Eyre, Fukunaga was approached in 2012 by Warner Bros. to write and direct their planned adaptation of Stephen King's iconic horror novel IT.

Following the completion of his script, principal photography was planned to begin in the summer of 2016 and We Are The Millers' star Will Poulter was cast as the film's antagonist, the shape-shifting clown Pennywise.

However, due to conflicts with New Line Cinema over the budget of the film and their alleged interference with his artistic vision, Fukunaga dropped out of the project and was instead credited as a co-writer of Andy Muschietti's eventual 2017 film.
