Casting Harry Potter TV Show Reboot

7. Professor Dumbledore - Ian McKellan

Roman Griffin Davis Harry Potter
Warner Bros./New Line Cinema

Professor Albus Dumbledore is the greatest wizard this side of Gandalf and has already been played by three actors. Richard Harris, Michael Gambon and Jude Law have all delivered excellent turns as Hogwart's most famous headmaster, but there could be one actor to rule them all, one who was actually given a chance to do so in the films already but turned it down.

There but for the grace of Middle-Earth, Ian McKellan would have been perfect as Dumbledore, but turned it down for fear of typecasting. He has acted in such a wide variety of films at this point that there is little chance of that so, while he may be Gandalf, he could also play Albus.

He is one of the greatest actors alive today, one who's voice is both resonating and calming. We know already that he is a swift hand with magic, so this would hardly be much of a stretch for him. Yet it is simply the power that McKellan exudes in every performance that would make him the ideal candidate here. Dumbledore is meant to be old enough to be one of the wisest wizards in the world and, although this may sound indelicate, McKellan certainly could play this part well. With the help of the make-up team, of course!

For us, there really is only one choice for Albus Dumbledore. Cut, print, it's a wrap!
