Cats Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

3. The Virtually Non-Existent "Plot"

Cats Judi Dench

Cats is admittedly an extremely difficult musical to adapt into movie form if only because it doesn't really have much of a story at all. And that's probably precisely why it never should've been made.

But even so, the movie makes precious little attempt to solidify the thin narrative for audiences who haven't seen the musical, and so the result is a film almost entirely a revolving door of characters introducing themselves via bombastic musical numbers.

While the scant plot is also a frequent complaint about the musical itself, clearly something had to change in the transition to the big screen.

Instead Hooper decides to double down, settling for only a most wafer-thin story while hoping that the elaborate song-and-dance routines will keep audiences interested.

If you come out of the movie with little idea of what Cats is actually about, nobody could blame you.
