In many ways, Nolan's adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey represents the peak of many of his greatest infatuations: there's a flawed and desperate hero trying to find home in Odysseus (Matt Damon); there's otherworldly obstacles blocking his path, allies and enemies aligned to hinder and save him; and, of course, the director's ever-dependable ability to play with time and place to tell a story constantly shifting its appearance. 

Adapting Homer's great epic was always going to be a thankless task, but Nolan makes it sing, mostly because of how he honours its greatest plotlines and themes, but also because of how he gives it a modern, timely feel. This is a film about the nature of storytelling, of oral tradition and myth, and he makes it his own with stunning effects, large helpings of grotesque horror, and hope.

Grounded throughout by its all-star cast - Damon is exceptional as a man unsure of who he is in light of his sins, as are Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway as his mourning family - The Odyssey is a grand, bold vision of terror, survival, faith, and love, a masterpiece through-and-through.
