In the end, though, the crowning achievement of Christopher Nolan's career to date remains Dunkirk, his deeply moving, moment-by-moment re-telling of the British evacuation from France in 1940. It features every trademark - his bold set design and moody sound - and Nolan's most perfect command of form. 

In plot, Dunkirk has little. There are characters at sea racing to offer their aid to the evacuation, the soldiers on the beach waiting for a rescue that may never come, and a pilot in the skies (Tom Hardy, delivering a moving performance with just his eyes).

Together, these subplots form the film's larger exploration of heroism, sacrifice, and war's uncertainty.
