Every Christopher Nolan Movie, Ranked

To date the most oblique and unfocussed film of Nolan's career, Tenet is a strange beast to admire, simultaneously ambitious and dull, beautiful and unmoving. The director wanted audiences to "feel" Tenet, not just watch it, and this is clear; he's less concerned with story and explanation as he is with dazzling audiences with grandeur.

A big, bold, utterly enveloping feast for the senses, Tenet finds Nolan crafting another thriller about time and the consequences of the past, with a painfully wooden John David Washington centre stage as a CIA operative on a quest to unravel the mystery of a future calamity.

It's all very safe for Nolan, and also strangely emotionless, with nothing and no one to really connect to. 

Still, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more ravishing technical achievement in our recent filmmaking era. Despite its flaws, Tenet features some of the director's most inventive, explosive set pieces and action sequences. It's just a shame all that visual flair struggles to cover up the hollowness lying underneath.
