20 Most Divisive Movie Scenes Ever

8. Ricky Films A Bag - American Beauty

American Beauty

American Beauty is one of the most acclaimed films of the entire 1990s, no matter that one of its most iconic scenes is also one of its most contentious.

This scene in question sees Jane (Thora Birch) hanging out with her strange neighbour Ricky (Wes Bentley), who shows her the most beautiful thing he's ever filmed - a plastic bag flying around in the wind in front of a brick wall.

This scene is really a litmus test for every individual viewer - can you get onboard with the idea that beauty can be found in even the most potentially mundane of objects and moments, or does it scream "pretentious musings of a first-year film student" to you?

Ask anyone about this scene and you can flip a coin on whether they love it or hate it, surely unaided by the fact that it's been so widely parodied, most famously in Not Another Teen Movie and Family Guy.
