Ocean's Twelve received wildly mixed reviews from critics and general audiences alike, and the tipping point for many was the subplot in which Tess Ocean (Julia Roberts) poses as a pregnant Julia Roberts in order to swap out the Imperial Coronation Fabergé egg.

This was just a step too far in the unexpectedly meta direction for a lot of people, especially coming in 2004 when fourth wall-breaking wink-wink storytelling wasn't nearly as common as it is today. 

For some, pulling back the curtain so aggressively was just too much - an indulgent navel-gazing exercise that temporarily distracted from the central heist caper.

But there are absolutely those who love that Steven Soderbergh went there, playfully subverting the expectations of a big splashy Hollywood tentpole by blatantly drawing attention to the film's own artifice.

In the very least, you can't accuse him of just doing the exact same thing again in this sequel, even if some might've actually preferred that.
