DC Extended Universe: 5 Best & 5 Worst Characters Introduced In 2016

3. Rick Flag (Suicide Squad)

When the person tasked with leading a group comprised of colorful characters like Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and Killer Croc is just a normal man, it's no surprise that he might not end up shining as brightly in comparison, but that could easily be made up for via a wealth of personality. Unfortunately, Rick Flag turned out to be nothing more than a wet blanket, existing merely to occasionally butt heads with Deadshot without bringing anything else to the table.

Of all the characters on the team, Flag has the biggest motivation to stop Enchantress. After all, she's taken possession of his girlfriend, June Moone. In another film, Flag's drive to rescue her and the emotional torment of potentially having to kill someone he loves to save the world would be a powerful throughline in the film for the audience to latch onto, but here, it's hard to care about what happens to him - or June, for that matter - at any given point.

The film simply presents the idea that he and June are in love and demands everyone go along with it, rather than give it any weight by, perhaps, throwing out the occasional flashback or turning Flag into a three-dimensional character whose personal goal is worth investing in. At worst, Rick Flag is just flat-out boring; at best, he's merely just there. And for a character of such implied importance, that's far from a good thing.
