DCEU: 10 Changes From The Comics That Were Totally Justified
7. Lex Luthor Creating Doomsday (Batman V Superman)
Lex Luthor's plan to unleash Doomsday on Metropolis at the end of Batman v Superman wasn't particularly well thought out and the creature itself was a mass of horrible CGI, but altering the alien powerhouse's origins wasn't a cardinal sin.
In the original DC Comics, Doomsday is an ancient monster created by Kryptonian genetic engineering gone awry. Luthor had no hand in his backstory, though it's easy to see why Zack Snyder played fast and loose with this fact.
Batman v Superman had to up the ante in the final act somehow, and that proved difficult considering a hero-on-hero showdown takes place in the middle of the story. Introducing Doomsday was one way to achieve that, and having Luthor create him after gaining access to Kryptonian technology ushered him in organically.
Many fans were unhappy with the way Doomsday was depicted, and it's easy to see why. Poor CG aside, he looks like a rejected Cave Troll design from the Lord of the Rings movies, but it's important to point out that altering his origins wasn't the problem here.
Snyder needed a threat big enough to require the pooled resources of DC Comics' holy trinity of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, and he introduced one in a way that made sense in the context of the plot.
