De Niro/Rourke's dark 1987 thriller ANGEL HEART gets remake!
Remake time again guys. Variety say big time producer Michael De Luca is the figurehead for putting into development a remake of the very bleak dark 1987 thriller ANGEL HEART. De Luca has acquired both the rights to the original Alan Parker film and also William Hjortsberg's novel "Falling Angel" of which the film was based. In the original, Mickey Rourke starred as a New York detective who hired a mysterious client to track down a once popular performer who owes him. Though this ain't a straight up detective thriller, it soon turns supernatural with a memorable performance by Robert De Niro as The Devil and a beautiful Lisa Bonet in her first movie role.
"It's a great blend of genres with a great Faustian bargain, compelling, universal themes and a rare combination of literary and commercial appeal," he said. The original movie was pretty controversial on it's release, not because of it's supernatural themes and violence but because of it's steamy sex scenes which caused the MPAA to slap it with a "death nail" X rating, which forced Parker to cut his movie to secure a R.
It's not just Mickey Rourke's amazing visceral performance, it's not just the screen presence of seeing De Niro as The Devil, not just Alan Parker's great and unsettling direction, not just the shock of seeing a child star from the Cosby's give a charismatic and showing lots of skin performance, not just the Michael Seresin cinematagrophy or the great score from Trevor Jones.
It's a combination of all of those elements that made ANGEL HEART such a good movie. Good luck with trying to recapture that guys!
