With only two films under his belt - 2004's one man show, Primer, and 2013's heady Upstream Colour - former software engineer Carruth is a Hollywood enigma. What he lacks in output he makes up for in pushing the boundaries of what can be put up on screen. This is, afterall, the man that Rian Johnson sought advice from on how to frame Looper's time travel sequences, only to shy away because his ideas were too futuristic.

But where are his action credentials? Yet to be proven, but, that doesn't make him any lesser of a candidate to helm the second coming of Deadpool. With his calling card feature he showed he could create a unique sci-fi tale, as well doing everything else from starring and composing the score, while Upstream Colour remains one of the most talked about movies in recent years.

Carruth is pretty much the most exciting director working in Hollywood that you haven't heard of and something as offbeat as a Deadpool movie could be his ticket to the big time.
