Despite all the fourth-wall-breaking, non-linear editing and dirty gags, the first Deadpool movie didnt have the most inspired narrative at its core. The film was great fun, but hidden beneath all the coolness was an ordinary three-act story about a man getting powers, losing his girlfriend and going on a revenge rampage. With the addition of Cable, Deadpool 2 could do something much more interesting with its narrative. Cables time-travelling antics open up whole new possibilities, and possible even enable a discussion of the ethics of time-travel. Would it be safe for Deadpool to go back and try to save his face, or is the timeline too fragile? This could be an interesting ground to explore. Cables dark, complicated past could come into play, as well. Perhaps hell have a larger war waging with a major villain, and hell need Deadpools help to finish the job. Itd be interesting to see how Wade Wilson would function in a more epic story that isnt entirely progressed by his personal motivations. I, for one, would love to see how Deadpool would fit into a sci-fi epic where Cable is entrenched in a time-travel-incorporating battle against evil. Its easy to be funny when theres not much else going on; but how would he cope in a true global crisis? Perhaps well find out in Deadpool 2, thanks to Cable.
