Deadpool 2 Review: 8 Ups & 3 Downs

1. The Improvement In Humour

When you're faced with the prospect of outdoing a comedy, there's always a temptation to turn the dial up to 11 while also stripping out nuance and real intellect to make a sort of distilled version of the original to try and double down on the impact. Let's call it Minion syndrome.

But Deadpool 2 absolutely avoids it and is actually considerably more funny than its predecessor. The self-awareness is dialled up, there are better barbs thrown at Marvel and other comic book movie properties and the entire X-Force and mid-credits sequences will have you rolling around.

And thanks to more serious anchors like Domino and Cable, the comedy never outstays its welcome. This is not Jim Carrery's The Mash (and by God, it could have been), because Ryan Reynolds knows that Deadpool's shtick only works when there are people unwilling to suffer his bullsh*t.

In that respect, the writing is absolutely brilliant and honestly, the balance of comedy, action and real heart is about the most impressive thing of 2018's movies so far.
