It makes sense that Ryan Reynolds would be the main carry over from the Deadpool test footage. It's Reynolds in the starring role that really made sure the thing got greenlit in the first place. He's a bankable star, even if his last superhero leading role (Green Lantern) was kind of a bomb, and his most recent movie (The Voices) isn't exactly a crowd-pleaser. But he's the guy whose face is going to sell this film to the Average Joe, and his presence that got the suits to sign off on it. What's more surprising is that Fox has allowed Tim Miller, who directed the test footage, to stay on and helm the finished feature and it'll be his directorial debut. So credit to them for not going and snapping up the latest flavour-of-the-month commercial director (or shudder Brett Ratner) to lead Deadpool, but instead stick with Miller, best known as the co-founder of visual effects company Blur Studio, where he put together the CGI animated openings to Thor: The Dark World and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
