Despicable Me 3 Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

5. The Minions Are Used Surprisingly Sparingly

Love them or hate them, the Minions are here to stay, and after their own spin-off movie grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, it would've surprised just about nobody if Despicable Me 3 ended up being "Minions and Gru" rather than a Gru-centric sequel.

Thankfully, Illumination has given the Minions a surprisingly restrained treatment here, for while they do appear frequently throughout, their skits are scattered around rather judiciously and don't overpower Gru's story.

Your opinion on the little yellow guys won't be at all changed by this movie, but admirably they're kept in the periphery rather than risk stealing the thunder away from Gru.
