1. Kate Mulgrew
I almost missed this talk thanks to a timing clash with Patrick Stewart's photo shoot. I'm glad I made the effort to get into the hall because what followed was the best talk of all the five captains. Kate Mulgrew talked mainly about Star Trek Voyager (which is what you want). She covered everything from Captain Janeway's hair, her relief that Janeway and Chakotay didn't get it together on the show and that other female actresses in Hollywood might have ''captain envy'' about her playing the first female captain in Star Trek. She also said a little about her issues with Jeri Ryan who played Seven Of Nine. Having spent the previous four years deliberately not sexualizing Janeway, she was annoyed that the producers brought in a character like Seven Of Nine who was obviously there to inject sex into Voyager. She said she liked Jeri Ryan but they were ''apples and oranges.'' But what made Mulgrew stand out was that considering the amount of people she must have seen over the weekend, she was still able to remember names and details about some of the people asking the questions. It gave the impression that when she says that this convention is the best one she has ever done, it wasn't just lip service to get a round of applause, she meant it. Mulgrew commented on how polite everyone was and that the American fans can learn a thing or two about being courteous from the British. At the end she invited some fans who were over 50 years of age to come on stage and ask a question. Again, she didn't have to do that but she came across genuine and nice and it seemed like the natural thing to do. You couldn't help but love her for that. Flirty, funny and all round nice lady, Kate Mulgrew made sure everyone left the hall happy (not in that way) and you got a real sense that she appreciated the effort everyone had made to come see her. And it showed that the talks I was not expecting much from, turned out to be the ones I will remember the most.
