20 Most Disappointing Horror Movies of the 2020s (So Far)
4. Demonic
Now in fairness, filmmaker Neill Blomkamp's career has been on a disappointing downslide ever since 2009's brilliant District 9, but his 2021 sci-fi horror film Demonic at least touted the promise of a back-to-basics, low-budget swing for the fences.
The original trailer for Demonic went viral for teasing the presence of black ops-style priests who arm up to take on a supernatural evil, and frankly that was enough to sell many on this one.
But Demonic sadly fell far short of the mark, with the teased elevated action ultimately accounting for just a tiny sliver of its runtime, most of the film instead being a decidedly blander and more ordinary supernatural horror flick.
Bar some fleeting moments of visual invention and a solid lead performance from Carly Pope, this marked yet another blow for Blomkamp, who seemingly just wanted to make something quick and easy during the pandemic.
At least he rebounded somewhat with 2023's not-bad adaptation of hit video game Gran Turismo.
