20 Most Disappointing Horror Movies of the 2020s (So Far)

Death of a Unicorn had potential out the wazoo - an A24-distributed black comedy about a father and daughter who accidentally run over and kill a unicorn, with Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega playing the lead roles? What's not to like?

And while Alex Scharfman's film is at least perfectly watchable, it also feels like a brutal squandering of a concept that had so, so much more juice.

Rather than drill down into the sheer bonkers absurdity of the setup, Scharfman's script drowns itself in unnecessary subplots and schmaltzy character drama, while the narrative brings nothing new to the expected eat-the-rich thematics.

There are some gnarly kills to savour and the ensemble cast tries their best - especially Will Poulter and Anthony Carrigan - but ultimately this is a surprisingly anonymous offering considering both its outrageous concept and the caliber of its cast.

Truly, this is one of those brilliant movie ideas that someone needs to try again in, say, another 15 or 20 years.
