20 Most Disappointing Horror Movies of the 2020s (So Far)
19. Last Night in Soho
The prospect of a filmmaker as talented as Edgar Wright helming a psychological horror film that's an equal-parts homage to British Hammer Horror and giallo was basically catnip to genre fans.
Considering Wright's track record and the stupid-good cast he assembled for this one, there wasn't much reason to doubt his ability to pull it off, and while Last Night in Soho was by no means a terrible film, it was nevertheless a thunderous disappointment from one of our most exciting auteurs.
Unquestionably Wright's worst film up to this point - until his recent remake of The Running Man, at least - Last Night in Soho has style to spare and killer performances from Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Matt Smith, but it's all ultimately in service of a clunky, leaden script.
Wright simply isn't a nuanced enough writer to tackle themes of misogyny and abuse with any real insight or delicacy, and so these aspects come off superficial at best, woefully clumsy at worst.
This is without getting into a third act that, in all of its gonzo silliness, undermines the more nimbly assembled build-up.
