9. The Next Tarantino Genre Deconstruction
I believe it was Martin Scorsese who once said on Quentin Tarantino something along the lines of "he's great, but I'd love to see a Tarantino movie". Tarantino is a genre guy to the core as read by his filmography to date: Reservoir Dogs is the Heist movie; Pulp Fiction is the Crime Drama; Kill Bill the Martial Arts Epic; Inglourious Bastards the War Film. However, despite the fact that Tarantino films may lack a personal element (leading some to criticise them as vacuous), as a master deconstructor of genre, few filmmakers can even get near the same stratosphere as he, let alone rise to his dizzying level. Each time Tarantino deconstructs a genre, he somehow manages to completely reinvigorate it with stunningly unique insights and uses of the conventions that it's built upon. In my view, this is the mark of a truly great filmmaker. You can bet your ass I'm salivating at the prospect of Tarantino's deconstruction of the Western, which is easily one of my favourite genres of all time.
