Doctor Sleep Trailer Breakdown: 10 Things You Need To See

4. Flanagan's Distinct Visuals

Doctor Sleep Trailer
Warner Bros.

From the opening frame of this trailer, it is incredibly apparent that it is indeed a Mike Flanagan film. And that is a great thing.

Audiences are undoubtedly most familiar with Flanagan thanks to his directing and showrunner duties on last October’s uber-successful The Haunting of Hill House series, but he has been working his ass off making genuinely great horror films for years now. Films like Hush, Before I Wake, and Gerald’s Game are just a few examples of just how much Flanagan can do with a great hook.

Over the course of his body of work, Flanagan and his long-time cinematographer Michael Fimognari have developed an aesthetic and texture all their own, and Doctor Sleep exudes this in every shot in this trailer. From the blue-ish hued color grading to the slow, methodical camerawork, this feels entirely like a Flanagan film.

Which is great, because that’s exactly what this film needed. No one is ever going to be able to recapture what Kubrick did with the original film, so to see Flanagan come onboard and bring his own very distinct sensibilities to the table is perfect.
