Doctor Strange: 25 WTF Moments
19. Was That Captain Marvel's New Origin?!
Here's something we definitely know: Marvel don't want to do the comic book origin of Captain Marvel because it's way too similar to the stinking Green Lantern movie, and nobody wants to attract poor publicity by proximity to garbage. So it seems we're going to get a whole new origin for Carol Danvers.
And oddly, it looks like the media are intent on insisting that the origin has already happened, in a throw-away comment in Strange. Because that's how Marvel would introduce their first bona-fide leading lady...
During Strange's fateful car journey, he talks to a colleague about possible cases and she mentions a woman in her 20s who was struck by lightning, with the interesting sidebar that she has a brain implant to keep her schizophrenia in check.
Having heard the line EW (via /Film) asked director Scott Derrickson if that might be Captain Marvel's new origin. His reply set the Internet into a spiral...
Remember that Brittany Murphy movie where she goes ‘I’ll never tell…’
That's not a yes, no matter how anyone spins it. But it's intriguing.
Even more intriguing - and more WTF worthy - is the fact that IF it's really her origin, it's basically hinting at Captain Marvel borrowing some of Sentry's origin from the comics. The idea of a superhero "trapped" in the body of a normal and accidentally being "awoken" is pretty much a mongrelisation of that iconic story. I don't know whether to be excited or appalled.
