With the movie now finally out in cinemas globally, it can finally be confirmed that the trailers and marketing showed way too much footage. Almost every big surprise was given away beforehand, including Captain Marvel’s appearance.

It was obscured, and just a snap-shot of Maria in action, but the internet is ruthless, and found a way to all but confirm the identity of the glowing character fighting Wanda. Taking the lack of surprise out of the equation however, Maria’s return to the MCU was a triumph.

After the events of Captain Marvel, Maria was revealed to have died in WandaVision during the Blip, but not in this universe. Here, it was she rather than Carol Danvers that became Captain Marvel, and it’s a dynamic that would have been great to explore even further.

She was very similar to her daughter Monica, in that she was a no-nonsense badass who wasn’t about to take any sh*t from anyone. She wasn’t scared of anyone, even Wanda, and though she ultimately lost her fight with the Scarlet Witch, this was commendable.
