As one of the few characters returning to his MCU role from the first Doctor Strange movie six years earlier, there was a lot of excitement surrounding the return of Karl Mordo.

Chiwetel Ejiofor is a phenomenal actor, and the post-credit scene from 2016 promised an explosive showdown between the two masters of the mystic arts. However, this was not quite the case. Though the fact that Strange and Mordo’s relationship turned sour was referenced, the post-credit scene was all but ignored.

Instead, this was a different Mordo from a different universe. In reality, Mordo actually offered very little to the movie save for an introduction to the Illuminati. He and Strange had a classic comic book movie fight, but it didn’t really lead anywhere, with Mordo almost being forgotten about after Stephen escaped him.

This was a shame, as Ejiofor could have offered so much more to the second instalment in the Doctor Strange franchise. He was the only member of the Illuminati who wasn't outright killed by Wanda however, so there is at least a slim hope that he may live up to his potential in the future.
