Doctor Strange: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best
7. Dormammu
There's nothing wrong with Dormammu as a character, or with the excellent scene in which he kills Strange over and over in a time loop (which should have lasted for at least a period of years given how old and probably patient the demon is), but the design is a little silly. He should have had the famous Faltine flaming head look (though Marvel might have been burned too many times by Ghost Rider to invite even slight comparisons), or looked a little bit more like obvious source point Chernabog.
And as DC proved when they jumped the shark with Doomsday in Batman v Superman, it's often a bad decision to go too big too quickly: it means you basically write yourself into a corner and you'll have to contend with the inevitable expectations of escalation and the problem of not being able to actually escalate.
Such is the case with Dormammu, one of the most notorious big bads of Doctor Strange's multi-verse who has the potential to make Thanos look like Ronan the Destroyer. He's a big deal, and while it's a good thing to see Strange tested by a new threat on a completely different scale to what the Avengers have ever faced, overcoming such a big foe in his first outing presents the writers of the impending sequel a big problem. They've now got to outdo him, and there isn't a great deal of room to do so unless they manage to get the rights to Galactus back.
