4. Trapping The Doctor In His Confession Dial - <i>Heaven Sent</i>
Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor went through the mill during his tenure. He was starved of oxygen and subsequently blinded, had his TARDIS miniaturised, and lost his best friend, Clara, and all memory of her. One moment of pure, intense suffering that stands out from the already too-long list originates from none other than his own people, the Time Lords.
Having been shown how desperate The Doctor was to find Gallifrey again, at the conclusion of Death in Heaven, we know just how much The Doctor's home meant to him. Seeing the Time Lords then trap him inside his own Confession Dial in order to torture the 'Secret of the Hybrid' out of him was more than cruel- it was puire evil. The Doctor refused to confess this information, and as a result, the Time Lords had him trapped in the Confession Dial for 4.5 billion years.
Thankfully he escaped, only to overthrow the incumbent President, Rassilon, and bring at least a little of the light back to a darkened Gallifrey.
